History of The Saint Florian Society Many years ago a small group of Firefighters began hosting an annual Mass honoring Firefighters. This group of Firefighters, ranging from the rank of Firefighter to District Chief, Active and Retired, officially became known as the Saint Florian Society in 2001. The St. Florian Society is based on three founding values; the Christian values of charity, integrity and fraternal brotherhood. The St. Florian Society is open to any member or friend of the fire service wishing to donate time to help firefighter families in need. Each year at the annual Firefighter Mass the society awards the Kimberly Ann Smith medal to a member that best exemplifies these three founding values. Kimberly Ann Smith, one of the original charter members, was memorialized after losing her life battling a fire in 2000. Since then, the St. Florian Society has awarded eight medals. The recipients are Frank Maher, Ken Rammrath, Joseph Gregory, Tommy Skinner, Richard Kercho, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, John Wiechkoske, and James Dillon.
No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.
